If you have a damp basement, you want to do everything you can to make sure that you stop that from happening. There are a lot of things that you can do to help keep the water out of your basement.
Move Your Downspout
One thing that you can do is to move your downspout. When it rains, the gutters collect the water that runs off the roof, and then funnel it to the downspout, where it runs out and onto the ground at the end of the downspout. The downspout often lets out right by your foundation, which means the water can get down into your basement and foundation. But, if you get an extender for your downspout, you can increase the distance from your house, and have the downspout empty out somewhere else. You can also get a cement trough that you can put under your downspout, which will roughly do the same thing.
There are a variety of waterproofing materials that you can put on your basement to make sure that water isn't getting your basement. One option is to use something like a membrane that goes on the outside of the walls. The way that it works is that the person installing the membrane will dig out around the basement and foundation, install the membrane, and then cover it back up. Another option, and one that is easier, is to paint on some special waterproofing material. This material is quite thick and you paint it in an even layer on the wall, and you can even cover the floor with it, if you want to. Once it dries, you can then paint over it or lay your flooring over it. The nice thing about using these paint-on waterproofing materials is that it is something that you can do on your own. It can be a good first place for you to start to see if you can remedy the problem yourself. When you do this, you want to make sure that you do it on a day when it's dry, and where it's expected to be dry for a few days, which will give the waterproofing time to dry and cure.
